COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WANE) – The faster internet push is becoming a reality in parts of Whitley County.
Surf Broadband Solutions has announced plans to invest $ 5 million in fiber infrastructure for Columbia City. The network would give residents fiber-optic Internet access 100 times faster than telephone lines or coaxial lines. The city hopes the project, funded entirely by private investment, will give new energy to businesses in the region and increase the productivity of people working from home or virtual learning.
Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel said they have several internet options in Columbia City, but none of them are as fast as broadband. While he expects it to be good for business, he believes it will just be good for Columbia City in general.
âFrom a quality of life point of view, obviously COVID if that hasn’t taught us anything, the thing we’ve really learned is that no matter what age, no matter what type of business, no matter what part of life you find yourself in, you have to have good, reliable internet options, âDaniels said. “For our residents, this offers another opportunity to connect to the world connected to education and health.”
The teams expect to start work on the fiber optic network in the next two to three weeks. Once started, construction is expected to take about two years.
